Recession...Myth or Reality?

The world is going crazy due to the spread of the threat of recession. However, i firmly believe that recession is only a concept developed by the capitalists of the world, to further deprive the poor and feed the rich. If we really think about it, the problem is not the availability of resources, but the distribution and the use of these resources. In Jamaica, the saying, "donkey say di worl' nuh level" goes to show that the balances of the world are almost always tipped towards the wealthy and the powerful.

How can we be facing a so-called "recession" with people being able to afford to buy 2 million pound dresses for a single night? (Paris Hilton) The problem with the world is that due to the spread of the western standard of living, people have abandoned the notions of selflessness and kindness and have adopted selfishness and self-centeredness as the order of the day. If we live for ourselves and ONLY ourselves, we will force ourselves into a state of deprivation.

Secondly, we need to stop believing that development should only be focused on the physical aspects of the world. How can we create machines that only destroy the Earth, the only Earth we have to live on, and then boast that we are developed? Development should be centred on the growth of human beings, not the destruction of human beings. We need to start embracing the Earth we have to live on because, despite our achievements in technology, we still cannot live on any other planet. As in olden days, so called "uncivilised" societies were able to think of the Earth in every aspect of their lives. They worked in HARMONY with nature, not against it, and look how healthy they were! The Mayans were one of the most educated and successful people the world has ever seen. They didn't need to polute the air and create harmful machines. They simply focused on the needs of each other, while keeping nature in mind.

I said all that to say this, recession is only a concept. The reality is we are living in a world plagued with selfishness, ruthlessness, sin and sheer evil. We need to wise up, seek God, and return the world to the type of place it must be. While the meek n lowly work hard to support ourselves, the rich are sucking us dry like the leeches they are. WE NEED TO REALIZE THIS and try to do something about it. Think about it people, as teens, WE are the future.

Recession? is it truly a concept of the mind. It is clear that even within our Jamaican society that decisions have been made and agreements signed by head of state which don't truly help the country but this fact is hidden from the wider society. With modernization society has been more materialistic and self centered and therefore, if there is any contribution made to the wider society it because it will further help that particular individual. So is this recession really a concept of the mind maybe so;we live in a capitalist world and resources aren't distributed equal and this situation won't get any better but we need realize that the world's population is growing rapidly and if one's population continues to grow with the limited access to resources then the recession will be reality for some. But i will agree that these circumstances have occurred to keep the so called 'world powers' or first world countries in control.Thereby leaving the rest of the world at there mercy

I agree with you, however, ecession would be a real concept. This is so as the world in its orientation is biased towards rich people and they run the world. So on this premise it is a real concept. It all began with Bush's selfish act to get back at Iraq and thus started a war there. This selfish move unfortunately affected the world.

Yes the recession is based on selfishness of the rich. If the rich people would get some sort of vision and decide to give even a fraction of their pay cheque to assist in the situation I am sure it wouldn't be that bad.

If our own parliamentary leaders would do all for the country as they say, why not give up some of their salary so it can be used for social development? So people will not have to be poor, as Bruce Golding stated in his election speech. So we can also stop borrowing so much and redeem ourselves from the pit of debt.

It has been said before and I will repeat it, we have to go back to living primitively. That's the only way to survive right now. Christopher Tufton, Minister of Agriculture, stated that we have to go back to ground provisions like yam, cassava and sweet potato, because there will soon be shortage of rice. Things our ancestors ate years ago. Our ancestors paved the way and us with our technology were trying to make things better, but did it really make things any better? Look how many diseases have been brought about through this 'technology', which we cherish so dearly.

Now we go right back to the beginning. BACK TO BASICS.
Exactly! What I meant by saying that recession doesn't really exist though is that it is really just a fancy word for selfishness. If we really think about it, man dictates the economy so man can call it anything they wish to please themselves.

Recession is the reality we all share, not jus the powerful metropole, but down to the poorest nation we can id. One can argue that it is inevitable or that we have perpetrated it ourselves. I agree with the argument about the mal-distribution of wealth and resources which result in world poverty or any other social ills. However i believe that man will find the means and ways to recover from it. History is repeating itself. Whenever there is disaster it is human nature to re-group and start from scratch. In essence we will resort to more primitive means, not because it is ideal but because as humans we understand it is imperitive to do so.

We cannot solely blame the rich and their greed for the recession. Other country states who perpetrate this need for wealth allow the on going cycle of exploitation to grow and fester into the somewhat 'hopeless' situation we now face.

Again technology is our necessary evil. While it gives the illusion of making our lives easier, it creates a whole new age of dependency w/ a string of new diseases and global deprivation.

The real question is how long and by what means will we recover from this new age disaster they call the "RECESSION".

Well that's true yelesah. The Agricultural minister has so mentioned the need to eat more CASSAVA. I hope they had cassava on the menu when they had the after budget party at the Pegasus hotel. It's not only the ways to deal with the recession that we need to think of, we need to think of after the recession too. As it ahs been said on the news that STRAIN might be put on these products that we will have to resort to during the recession. This issue is a huge one and can be approached from so many angles.
