No Condoms in Prison and the Lesbian Filial Relations

The above is a disclaimer, so if you're whispering 'WTF' to yourself after reading this, then don't say I didn't warn you.

A matter that has been of particular interest to me came up in some discussions recently. The news report stated that the NDM - National Democratic Movement (who nobody even remember existed) was criticizing the government for rumours the executive members heard about the provision of condoms in prison.

Now, when I saw the headline [Headline: "NDM says Gov't to provide condoms for prisoners"] initially I thought the NDM was merely noting that they had heard that the government would do same. I was pretty excited because it's high time we stop the crap and stop lying to ourselves and stop pretending that male prisoners aren't having sex with other male prisoners. But alas, my joy was thwarted after I read the first few paragraphs... My joy then turned to rage.

The statement from which the article was written seemed to have been transcribed by the same snobbish, overly-self praised, wannabe-morally upright 19th century "Christian" bloke who penned (or perhaps "feathered" would be more appropriate) the famous words "whosoever shall be convicted of the abominable crime of buggery, committed either with mankind or with animal, shall be liable to be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for a term not exceeding ten years".

But in defence of said bloke that would have been the thinking at the time, because since then Britain has repealed their buggery law (or rather private consensual acts between two consenting individuals have thus been made legal across the board). So, these are different times as can be attested by this laptop I am typing on and not a clunky type-writer.

I digress. Anyway! I am not certain who was quoted in the article mainly because I have poor memory and also because I was too upset to pay attention. The article basically stated that the NDM executives were calling on the government to recall that homosexuality is illegal and this kind of thing will only 'fuel the fire' (for want of a better word and for lack of remembering the exact words used) and there was some discussion about morality of the nation going on there as well.

Now, Jamaica taking the morally high road when it's convenient will not work and by every estimation that ship has sailed reached is destination and is making it's second trip which we will miss again. It is preposterous to think that persons in 2014, in this day and age of technology and increased knowledge and breaking down of barriers, really believe that condoms should not be distributed in prisons. They are probably the same ones who will tell you not to allow young people access to condoms and then curse about the increasing rate of teenage pregnancy.

It is down-right hypocritical for a country to fund (or rather, facilitate partnerships through which funding is acquired) programmes for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care for men who have sex with men, and then turn around and decline the provision of condoms in prisons. Condoms, lubricant and other prevention tools are handed out to gay men regularly through the National HIV/STI Programme which is a sub-division of the Ministry of Health; but the men having sex in prison have forfeited their right to HIV prevention tools? So, because they broke the law, they should all just have sex and get infected with HIV and eventually die from AIDS-related illnesses? Is that the rehabilitated future we want for our current inmates?

It is a fact that men go into prison HIV negative and exit HIV positive, but apparently those figures are ignored by the Ministry of Health, by everyone really... because incarcerated folks are to be forgotten until one escapes from the hell. It is unfair for us to walk proudly to say we have made gains in the HIV response while neglecting a group which will always be vulnerable. Our present HIV prevalence rate is 1.8 % (a bit of an increase from the 1.6 a few years ago) and that is already cause for concern. The accepted rate, to show control of the epidemic, is 1 % and we're almost doubling that right now, yet we neglect to offer prevention services to prisoners (and other groups, but I won't discuss that right now). We need to really look into ourselves and ask ourselves whether we would want to be left without a choice, left without the choice to protect ourselves even when our human rights are already being infringed on by the more powerful male that shares a cell with us.

Why not offer condoms in prison?

Now on to another issue.... I was browsing the Facebook recently and came upon an article which stumped me :

Mother and Daughter Come Out about Lesbian Relationship

I had to search for other news sources on Google, because I could not believe this story was true. A mother and a daughter are in a lesbian relationship and believe people should leave them alone because it is their choice. The mother also stated that it cannot be classified as incest because she can't impregnate her daughter, she even added that if her daughter was in a relationship with her father then that would be a different thing because he can impregnate her.

NO LADY NO!

It is the same thing, you are the PARENT here and she is the CHILD here, either way it is wrong. Do you see how 'gender this' and 'gender that' crap has completely warped the minds of people? These are the same people who would say they believe in gender equality and men and women should be equal under the law and in the workplace and everywhere else, but will completely throw that shit out the window when it benefits them because "I can't make her pregnant".

Man, this got me so upset (by the way you may click the article headline above if you'd like to read the article yourself). I was so stunned, I did a Google search for the names and then came upon their Twitter page which pretty much disgusted me even more. Tweets like "I have my coffee with a honeybun every morning. It tastes just like my honeybun Vertasha, it's good to have nicknames to keep the spark". NOW WHAT THE FLYING F-------- !!

She (the mother) went as far as to include God in their union and stated that homosexuals (males of course) are nasty and what they have is a natural relationship.  Listen, I'm so disgusted with the fact that she believes this sort of union is okay simply because she is a lesbian and "we waited until she was 18 to have sex". LADY!

Before, I have a coronary or die from disgust I'm going to end here.

What are your views?

Well, my view on the buggery law (subject to my limited knowledge of it based on my lack of interest ) is this - sex in any way, shape or form between two consenting adults is really their business. I think that condoms should be issued in prisons. Prisoners are there to try and limit the incidence of problems in the wider society, ie, prevent them from committing further crimes. Why then do we want for them to have unprotected sex, come back in the society and create another problem for the already burdened state to deal with? That new problem i refer to is STI's including HIV and AIDS. Give them condoms. When since your sex life is everyone's business? I disagree with you about giving teenagers (by this I mean minors) condoms. Whether they are having sex or not the message should be "sex is not for you and we are not supporting your habit". Finally, about mom and daughter lesbians, may God bless their souls. People find all sort of ways to justify their behaviours and if the reasons they give allow them to sleep at night then so be it...
