WEEK IN REVIEW (tidbits you probably missed)

1. In the Prime Minister's speech in the whole process of the Budget Debate, he spoke about legalizing Casinos and Gambling Lounges. He also stated that poor people would not be allowed to gamble. How would this be regulated, seriously? Would one have to carry their last three pay slips to the bar to verify if they are over the poverty line? Think about it.... 2. 'Fart Gas' (as The Star called it) was sold to a group of primary school students by a vendor outside of the school. This vendor told them that they should buy it and let it go in their classrooms if they did not like their teacher. The students followed her instructions and dozens of them ended up in the hospital and 2 were critically injured. The 'fart gas' has instructions on it written in Spanish that stated that it should not be sold to children under 7 and should not be opened in enclosed areas.

Recession...Myth or Reality?

The world is going crazy due to the spread of the threat of recession. However, i firmly believe that recession is only a concept developed by the capitalists of the world, to further deprive the poor and feed the rich. If we really think about it, the problem is not the availability of resources, but the distribution and the use of these resources. In Jamaica, the saying, " donkey say di worl' nuh level " goes to show that the balances of the world are almost always tipped towards the wealthy and the powerful.

New Candy Flavoured Cocaine

April 21, 2008. (AP) New forms of synthetically sweetened cocaine has been discovered in California by federal drug agents who hope to stop its development before it becomes available to other parts of the nation. Drug agents said the new product was more sophisticated than previous forms that attempted to mix cocaine with powdered candy. The previous form was cut with extra flavoring, thus making it less potent, but the amount seized last week was full-strength, investigators say. Flavors included strawberry, coconut, lemon and cinnamon.Drug Enforcement Agents discovered the 1.5 pounds of synthetically sweetened cocaine in two homes in Modesto, Calif. The drugs would earn $1,100 to $1,400 an ounce on the street, compared to regular cocaine, which sells for $600 to $700 an ounce, they said.Gordon Taylor, the DEA’s assistant special agent in charge of the investigation, said the possibility of a candy-flavored cocaine epidemic would be extremely dangerous to children and teenagers.

The Internet

As teens going to high school and having access to the internet, atleast one e-mail 'bashing' another person or one of sexual content must have crossed your paths. In 2008 there has been a great increase in such emails, and now they are loaded with sexual content. There has been the Norman Manley high school video, the 'BEACH' pictures, the lesbian pictures, the UTECH girl pictures, the Lisa Hanna look-a-like pictures, and more recently the Kingston Technical High School video.

Political Rights and Freedoms?

It has been mentioned several times on the news about the JUTC (Jamaica Urban Transit Company) wanting to take over the UWI and UTECH chartered bus routes. As they declare that the UWI and UTECH buses are infringing on their routes and as such they have the right to take them (the routes) back.

LEWD EMAIL TARGETS LISA Politician and Miss World 1993, Lisa Hanna, is concerned about an explicit viral email titled ' PNP Candidate from South East St.Ann'. The e-mail consists of 14 pictures, most of which show a woman and two men engaging in various sexual acts . The email suggests that the woman in the photographs is Hanna. While the woman does bear a slight resemblance to the former beauty queen

Expression

Driving home from school today was really depressing. The amount of mad (schizophrenic) people or homeless people that I pass on my way home, really got me today. I am not sure why it was today of all days that it affected me, but it did. Sometimes the things they say are funny, but their existence, their meagre existence, is not only pitiful, but heart-breaking. What can we do for these people? I want to live a life of purpose, one that will change people's lives. I don't want to be another observer I want to do something, to change something, to be something.....
