What have you learnt in 2015?

Hey there !! I finally blew the dust off my blog and decided to make a blog post before the end of the year (in about a week or so). Two thousand and fifteen (because you should never begin a sentence with a number) has been a year. WHAT A DAMN YEAR! I would say I've grown and I've overcome and all that good stuff people tend to say at the end of the year in their reflections, but I think I'd rather say I survived.

An ally?

That fateful day in 2010 when I decided that I wanted to look at how homosexual relationships differ from heterosexual relationships for my final year research preject was the day I was introduced to J-FLAG and the Jamaica AIDS Support for Life (which shared premises at the time). Surely, I couldn't imagine that 3 years later I would be working for JASL and working closely with J-FLAG. That fateful day in 2010, changed my life.

An end to my Portia love affair

Nobody could say anything about Portia Simpson-Miller. She was the only Jamaican woman  I grew up seeing in Parliament and this spoke volumes to me. Although I was too young to be "keen on politics"  I followed her life closely and ofcourse I was the first one in front of the TV to witness her marriage to the most honourable, Errald Miller. The People's National Party was in power for most of my life and that's the political group I was familiar with. When the most honourable Portia Lucretia Simpson-Miller was named  the first female prime minister of Jamaica in 2006 ofcourse I was ecstatic . Not only did my girl Portia make it to the top of the lower house of Parliament after so many years in politics, but this meant that certain strides would have been made for women.

No Condoms in Prison and the Lesbian Filial Relations

The above is a disclaimer, so if you're whispering 'WTF' to yourself after reading this, then don't say I didn't warn you. A matter that has been of particular interest to me came up in some discussions recently. The news report stated that the NDM - National Democratic Movement (who nobody even remember existed) was criticizing the government for rumours the executive members heard about the provision of condoms in prison.

The Devil Highway

Image
"It took me 40 minutes to get to Ocho Rios from Kingston". "The highway shaved off 30 minutes off my journey". "I love the highway". "You have to be careful on that thing". "First time I drove there was in the night, it was interesting..." The above are a few comments about the new Ocho Rios leg of Highway 2000 that was recently completed and opened to the public. This route bypasses Mount Rosser (which a lot of Jamaicans would be ecstatic about). The toll road is FREE for a month (which ends on September 5 ) so get your free rides in - you may want to "test" it before you pay money to drive on it.
